Thyroid is a part of the endocrine system which produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolic rate as well as heart and dogestive function, muscle control, brain development, and bone maintenance.

The two common conditions of thyroid disorders:

  1. Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid):  This problem occurs when the thyroid doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone for the body’s needs. 

The symthomps may include:

  • Dry, coarse hair
  • Thinning of eyebrow
  • Puffiness in face
  • Slow heart rate
  • Weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Brittle nails
  • Low body temperature
  • Cold intolerance
  • Depression
  • Fatigue, muscle aches
  1. Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid): This problem occurs when the thyroid is overactive and makes excessive amounts of thyroid hormone.

  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Soft nails
  • High body temperature

In most cases, thyroid disorders can be well managed with the help of right medical treatment when detected early. Other than medical history and physical exam, specialized tests are used to diagnose thyroid disorders.
