Updated as of 28 Jan 2023.
What is the difference between the various types of tests?
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Test
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) swab tests detect the presence of the Covid-19 Antigen directly. This is regarded as the Gold Standard for testing for Covid-19 at present. The sample is obtained via the Nasopharyngeal route.
Serology IgM Antibody Test
This tests for the presence of antibodies (IgM/IgG) that are produced by the body in response to an infection by the Covid-19 virus. Serology tests alone cannot be used to accurately diagnose Covid-19 infection.
Antigen Rapid Test
This is usually used in pre-event testing or in conjunction with a PCR swab test in patients presenting with symptoms of an Acute Respiratory Infection. The test result is ready within 30 minutes.
Understanding COVID-19 vaccines
Why should I get the vaccine?
If more of us are vaccinated, it makes it more difficult for the virus to spread, making our society safer for all.
Are COVID-19 vaccines safe?
All vaccines used in Singapore have to meet guidelines and strict safety standards by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA).
Which vaccines are approved for use in Singapore?
HSA has approved Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to be under the National Vaccination Programme. The Sinovac vaccine is placed under the Special Access Route (SAR), so that private providers can draw on MOH’s existing stock to administer to individuals who wish to have it.
From 12 Dec onwards, AcuMed will be using Pfizer Bivalent Covid-19 vaccine.
Designated clinics: AcuMed Jurong Point, AcuMed Taman Jurong, AcuMed Woodlands
If I have chronic illnesses (e.g. high cholesterol and diabetes), can I still take the vaccine?
Yes. Anyone with chronic illnesses is recommended to receive the vaccine to protect themselves and those around them.
Will I experience any side effects after taking the vaccine?
Some common side effects include fever, redness, swelling at the injection site and fatigue. Don’t worry, as these side effects are part of your body’s response to the vaccine. However, if your side effects persist, please visit the doctor.
I am already vaccinated. Can I still get infected with COVID-19?
COVID-19 vaccines are 95% effective for most people. A person who is vaccinated can still get infected. However, the risk of becoming very ill after an infection is significantly reduced.
How much does the vaccine cost?
It is free for Singaporeans, Permanent Residents and long-term residents like work permit holders and foreign domestic workers.
